Optimizing Bill of Materials in System Manager – Engineering – Visual BOM

In the upper right-hand pane, locate the item for creating or updating a bill of materials (BOM). Double right-click on the part number to display it along with existing BOM data in the upper left pane. Adjust quantities of existing items or set them to 0 instead of deleting for historical tracking.

To include items in the BOM, select an item in the upper right pane, ensuring it’s highlighted. Hold Shift, then right-click/drag to place it in the upper left pane, whether in the top-level part or potential sub-assemblies.

The effective date displayed next to the part number signifies when it was added to the BOM. Note symbols: the hammer for “manufactured” items, money for “purchased” ones. It’s prudent to logically add a manufactured item to another manufactured item, creating a coherent sub-assembly structure.

After modifications, click the “S” symbol to save changes. Use the “1” and “+” symbols to view the BOM in single or multi-level structures. Note, cost accuracy requires executing separate cost roll-up processes detailed elsewhere.
